Geelong Adolescent Sexuality Project (GASP)

 GASP is a social and support service for young people who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender or questioning their sexuality.

Why is GASP important?

Approximately 10% of young people experience feelings of same sex attraction. Young people questioning their sexuality can feel isolated, depressed and experience homophobic abuse at school, in the home and on the street. GASP offers support, information, referral and social stuff for same sex attracted young people and aims to create a community that celebrates all young people. 

Meetings

GASP holds support groups for young people who are same sex attracted or questioning their sexuality. Research indicates the positive impact peer support groups can have on the mental health and wellbeing of same sex attracted young people. Group membership leads to an increase in friendships and support and a reduction in isolation and alienation that is a direct result of homophobia. The group offers young people a chance to meet other young people who might be experiencing the same things. It runs throughout the year and has benefited many young people.

Other areas of work that GASP is undertaking include:
• Events
GASP facilitates regular social events for young people. These events are organised by and for young people and offer a safe, fun, drug and alcohol free space for same sex attracted young and their friends. All young people are welcome!
 
• One on one support
For young people who just need someone to talk to about issues relating to their sexuality.
 
• Sexuality Training
For teachers, youth workers and organisations that work with young people. Supporting our community to work effectively with and support same sex attracted young people.
 
• Resourcing around sexuality issues
Information, posters and presentations for schools and other organisations working with young people.
 
• Sexual Diversity Classes with students
Classroom sessions on diversity and sexuality. This program deals with homophobia, difference and attitudes towards gay and lesbian people.
